Warmachine Game Night Report – 3/27/09

Game in progress

Game in progress

Last night we had one of our Warmachine nights.  We all decided on 350 point armies and had 3 games playing simultaneously. I had a mediocre night winning once and losing once.  My first fight was Khador versus Lar’s Cygnar.  We decided on a scenario rather than just a normal battle, something we don’t do very often.  We ended up playing the crossed lines scenario which doesn’t have a normal deployment to start the game.  Normally in Warmachine/Hordes either player starts on one side of the board or the other, in this case, we started in a scattered manner.  This lead to me being able to get into combat very quickly and get the upper hand on his large warjack.  From there it was a fairly easy victory.

My second game was Khador versus Jason’s Circle of Orboros.  Jason had an amazing night last night with 2 wins, this is far an away the best he’s

ever done.  He was able to catch me off guard and get a light warbeast into combat with my caster very early on.  This unit tied up almost my entire army for 2 rounds due to some of the worst rolling I’ve ever had.  After this, he was able to get his warcaster into combat with my caster and finish him off.

We are now discussing and trying to figure out if doing a campaign for Warmachine/Hordes would be feasible and worth the time investment in doing.  We are currently looking over the 3rd party rule sets that other players have created.  There are a couple of existing campaign settings for Warmachine/Hordes, however, they don’t really meet the needs of our group.  Currently there is a grand time line based campaign for just Warmachine that requires a large amount of miniatures and all 4 factions, we currently only have 3 of the 4.  Also, both Warmachine and Hordes have a map based territorial campaign that run independent of each other which would split our group into two.

So we’ve turned to some 3rd party rule sets created by other players and are hoping to find something that is balanced and playable among our entire group.  As this unfolds I’ll post more information about the rulesets we’re looking at and possibly using.

Necromunda Game Night Report – 3/22/09

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Sunday was the 3 meeting for the current Necromunda campaign. It’s safe to say that I did the worse last night, The Enforcers were 0-3 last night and 1-6 overall. On the opposite side of the spectrum The Spyrer’s were brought up to a 7-1 record as Lar’s was able to manage 3 wins last night, one of them against me. Over all, most of the gangs grew in size and ended up growing in size. Brian’s Redemptionist gang ended up on the lucky side of things and was able to purchase a Needle Pistol, a very rare and coveted item amongst all the guns within Necromunda. Bob’s Van Saar suffered a major casualty prior to last nights events, a certain gigantic dog decided to use one of his men as a chew toy.

Warmachine: Introduction

Monday, March 16th, 2009

One of the games that we frequently play is Warmachine which is made by Privateer Press. It was later expanded by Hordes, both Hordes and Warmachine are different but compatible with each other. It is a fantasy based miniatures game, which means, we have two opposing armies that collide in a mock battle on a table. This game is very similar to Necromunda in regards to game type. The one major difference is the amount of terrain/scenery that is used during a given game. Warmachine is much more sparsely populated (see image below) and the game scale is much different from Necromunda.

We have some plans as to how to discuss and show our playing of this game, creating the terrain/scenery, and all other things associated with this hobby. Most people see it as a game that you play, and it is, to me there is a lot more to the hobby that is not playing the game itself that are equally enjoyable. In the near future you will see the painting and modeling aspect of the game, specifically, the part of the hobby that is preparing/building the army as well as painting each model. This is not a requirement to play the game, however, most people that play these games feel that it adds to the game. One of the defining aspects of this hobby, to me, is that there is more than just “we play this game, it starts and finishes”. Warmachine has the added intricacy of creating a new army each time you play, each one plays differently and calls for both a different strategy and a different set of tactics each time it’s played. This creates the “new” feeling each time its played, something I very much enjoy. I also like that this game is far cheaper compared to it’s counterparts, this helps. Look forward to more information, both visual and written in the near future about all the aspects of Warmachine and Hordes.
