Space Hulk

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

When I started miniature gaming, Space Hulk had been out for a little while and never really caught my interest.  Fast forward a bunch of years, the game is out of production, and I’m attending one of my first Gen Con’s in Indy, and I happened to catch a glimpse of a custom space hulk game going on (this was prior to me bringing a camera along with me to Gen Con unfortunately) and after seeing that, I was hooked.  I’ve always wanted to get a copy of the game to see if it was worth it or not, enough so to build an elaborate, single purpose board for a game like Space Hulk.  When GW announced it was releasing a new version of Space Hulk, I was pretty excited, I had spent quite a bit of time bidding on various half filled copies of the older versions, so this, to me, was an easy button.

I have, as of going to Adepticon this year, now played through 5-6 missions or so both as the marines and the gene-stealers.  In each instance, they have been close games, giving tension to both sides in the decisions they are making.  Having played this only a few times, it was easy to see what draws people back to this game.  It follows 40k fluff but not the typical rule set we’re all familiar with, it’s a very simple system that involves very few stats/numbers, allowing for the game to be thought through and forcing both sides to make decisions while not entirely sure of the outcome.  The fact that it does deviate from the familiar rules known in 40k and Fantasy is not an issue, it’s refreshing to know that GW can produce quick playing, non-vague rules that are easy to use.  A couple of the games we have also divided the marines into 2 groups, allowing an extra player and brain does seem to add a little bit more difficulty for the gene-stealer player as 2 people working together is a pretty good advantage.

Knowing what I do know, I’m still on the fence as to weather or not I’d like to create a custom board and scenario(s) for this game unless I could somehow scale it to more than 3 players, Ideally 4-5 would be a good number for our group, so for now, this will be something on the back of my mind, and if opportunity presents itself, I could see making some rather grand sized board to play this game on.

Adepticon 2011 – Warhammer 40k Team Battle

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

At Adepticon this year, I was able to meet up with some friends, the same ones that I’ve been playing 40k with over the last few years.  Since 40k is a relatively new game to me, compared to Warhammer Fantasy, I’m still very much a newbie.  This was literally my 4th game so far, I hope to play more this year, but opponents aren’t exactly near by, so my time is limited with this game.

This game was a 3000 Points per team fight with Imperial Guard and Black Templars versus Space Wolves and Eldar.  My list was very troop heavy, and not because it’s effective, but because I enjoy throwing more waves of useless humans at my opponent.  This game was literally me playing the role of meat shield while the Black Templars did some heavy lifting.  In the end, it worked out and we managed a narrow victory, the game was close, and if another turn came up, it could have gone either way.

Thanks to my friend Richy for taking the time to literally take a picture every few minutes throughout the entire game, I ended up with over 150 images from him and I picked out a few good shots, mostly where my team was doing good! =)

Initial Impressions: Kings of War

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

Our group has not had the chance to give Mantic Games Kings of War.  This rule set is free download, print, and play with, which is exactly what we did.  The rules are short and concise and have a decent flow to them, they include 3 army lists, Elves, Dwarves, Undead, Abyssal Dwarves, and as of late, Orcs.  Each of these, of course, corresponds to a line of miniatures that they produces for the game.

This game plays very well, the rules are built such that you can use a good amount of GW figures with this game as well as any other rank and file 28mm mini’s.  It definitely has a Warhammer feel, there is no escaping that, deploying, moving, and playing the game feels very similar to Warhammer Fantasy, however, there is a key feature to this game that I can’t get over how elegant it is.  The game bases the units will to fight, strength, and wounds into a rule called Nerve.  This rule is a stat that every unit has in it’s stat line and is used to determine if they stay in the fight or run away due to getting beat up.  No miniatures removed as casualties in this game, just an overall unit damage score, which to me, allows for a pretty clean table and allows for a quicker game.

The rules are basic, they don’t include tons of fluff / background history of the armies and how they came to be.  They also don’t account for things like monsters or anything large in scale.  That’s not to say they won’t, but right now, it’s rank and file + cavalry, hopefully we’ll get some monsters and large beasts in the future.  I think most of the negatives are based around the age of the company and it’s still developing ruleset.

There has been a good amount of community response to the open beta that they did as well as the now official ruleset.  Having spoke with the creators at Adepticon, it seems like nothing but more features like tournament ready rules, scenarios, and army lists are coming in 2011.  I really appreciate the ideals of this company, they are marketing great miniatures and free rules, and encouraging to existing gamers who have collections of miniatures they’d rather not replace with the current edition of things, a new codex, and a new inconsistent set of rules like a certain other company.

Pro’s

  • Free Rule Set
  • Similar scale to existing fantasy rule sets
  • Simplistic rules with complex tactics
  • Community backed army lists

Con’s

  • Only 4 official army lists (more beta lists / community support is moving this up to the Pro category)
  • Community backed army lists, hardly tested at best right now (again, moving towards pro, but the community is growing)
  • The rules are basic, they lack a bit of depth in things like fluff, large models (dragons/monsters/etc), and
