I’ve been making some posts over on roadtobadab.blogspot.com, but I haven’t really done much here as a result. I’ve been actively painting and building my army to prepare for this large battle. I’ve been busy building and painting the Space Marine side of the Tyrant’s Legion list. This part of my list is 2 units of tactical marines with 4 Missile Launchers each.

Both Squads built and ready

Primed and ready to paint!

The Tyrant’s Legion list is built up of Astral Claw’s, which, after tons of reading, is a chapter of space marines that seems rather neat, I’ve ordered and will be using the Forgeworld transfers on the shoulder pads and knee pads. I’ve never really considered using Forgeworld bits/add-ons for an army, but I’m trying it out on this project.

Test paint job #1

Test Paint job #2

Since I’ve ended up with some space marines, I’ve been adding slowly to the pile. In the end, I should have a pretty sizable army to use, and with the paint scheme I’ve chose, it should all easily get painted. One thing is for sure, using Forgeworld add-ons adds up quickly, but they are specific and well done, it’s a strange toss up in the GW scheme of things and it leaves me with mixed feelings. Once I get more progress on this army / project I’ll post it. I’m also nearing completion on painting all of the IG infantry for this list, I can’t wait to finish this up.

This is by no means a comprehensive list, there are things we still want to test and eventually I’ll rewrite all of the rules for this.

I’ve posted about the large apocalypse games I’ve taken part in over the last few years, and they have all been great experiences….minus the loss of a Valkryie who got knocked off a table edge….

I was recently invited to a game based around the Badab War, to which I know next to nothing about. I’ve been reading more about it, and 40k fluff in general, so that I can understand WTF is going on. So far, I know that IG had a small roll helping one of the two sides in this fight! Great, right?

One of the neat things about this battle, that’s different from before is that there is a blog setup for each person participating in it to post their armies progress (of which I’m doing as well). What really blows my mind are all the crazy specific armies being built just for this fight, or at least primarily with this fight in mind. This just adds a whole knew level to the game to be played, did I mention this game is in late march next year?

For me, the goal is to try and have as much painted as I can, preferably my entire list that I bring, I’d say my whole army, but that’s just insane… In any event, you should check this out, the guys involved are all excellent modellers and painters, it’s worth looking at their creations. Also, below are some of the units I’m working on in various states of completion. I’ve got the itch to continue working on it, so for now I’m going to plow through as much of my Imperial Guard as I can stand, then I’ll go back to one of the 500 other things I’m doing, cause why not, right?

This would have been a post with a video battle report, but I totally botched shooting it and missed a turn, editing it and skipping stuff made it not very coherent, so it will be written in as a total abortion…sorry.

But, I did get a chance to play with the new Kings of War ruleset and it was Kingdom of Men versus Elves. I don’t have anything cohesive review, but I do have a few points that I think are note worthy.

Warmachines with the new rules of 1d6 needing a 6 to hit and then deal 1dX amount of damage is not good. It’s impossible to hit anything and do damage. I had 2 trebuchets fire every turn, 6 turns and 12 shots, and I didn’t do a single point of damage….not very useful at all. The previous method worked just fine IMO.

Elves having elite seem’s like it’s over powered, but I’m going to hold final judgement for a few more games.

The rules change to ensure after a combat was over, and pushed apart 1″, that there is no option other than charging back in. This prevents a unit from surviving and then opening fire instead of getting back into melee combat. There has been lots of discussion over this on Warseer (you’ve been warned, this is a super long thread).

Tripling attacks when engaging a warmachine in melee seems a bit much, but whatever works I guess.

Rules are now in booklet form, this is great and way better than printouts, also, $9 is a great price.

I would have liked to see more than 1 scenario, but it’s not hard to imagine up some other options really…..

As mentioned in a previous post, we tried a Siege game right before the second edition rules came out, as it stands, I’m going to do another round of this with the new rules and then make adjustments, and then hopefully I’ll start posting up some information on here for you all to test out. Right now it’s a modified version of the Siegecraft rules that someone posted up on warseer, pretty heavily modified actually…

In any event, If you’re looking for a good ruleset, minor quibbles aside, pick this up, it’s worth it, and Mantic seems to continue to slog through the miniature gaming community, and I’m right behind them on this.

I’ve had this project for quite some time now and I’ve finally got around to actually finishing it. The aptly named Gothic ‘Astle is actually a plastic kit from Pegasus Hobbies called the Gothic City Building Small Set #1. The kit was easy to put together and very well constructed constructed. The kits they offer are even modular, you could easily combine a few different ones together to create something unique. On top of that, as with most of Pegasus Hobbies products, it was cheap.

Completed Gothic 'Astle

This piece would stand great on it’s own, I decided to (at the time) use foam core for a base, in hind sight, I’d opt for the hardboard in a heart beat. I also added a wood floor to the inside. The paintjob was a simple matter of drybrushing grey’s and adding some basing material to the base. Overall I’m happy with the project, even if it took me 2 years to complete…I’m not sure why I waited so long.

This doesn’t happen often, but I finally got to play a round of 40k with some friends, it was a super good time, even though my team was not victorious. The teams were Space Marines and Imperial Guard versus Dark Eldar and Grey Knights. I noticed a few things in this game, as I’ve played enough games over the last few years to finally understand some of the nuances that exist in 40k, it’s take a long time to get to this point, but it’s setting in.

Many in cover in this Kill Point Match

Cover saves are super nice in this game, it makes my otherwise worthless army in terms of resilience / toughness much, much better. The Dark Eldar player could probably agree to a large extent as well. Imperial Guard have a ton of cool features, I’d like to know how some of these actually got through playtesting at GW to be honest, the Vendetta is an amazing unit to have, I now understand, entirely why all of those Adepticon tourney armies are loaded to the brim with these things. The two that I did have in this game were very dominant, and one of them also had a unit inside that it dropped off to add to the insult. It’s a shame that these things are so intense, I’d rather have them be support units and not so powerful.

IG Vendetta's are rad.

I like powerful units as much as the next guy, but this seems like a little much. Another thing that I noticed is that if you get most of your information about what Warhammer 40k is all about via the web, you’re missing a lot, as sites like Bell of Lost Souls and Dakka Dakka really only cater to Tournament, Win At All Costs, type people, which is a shame. It really skewed my view as that’s my only real insight into a game I get to play a few times a year.

A close game for sure

I can’t wait to go out there and throw down again, it’s gotten better each time I’ve played, which surprises me more and more each time.
